“Freaky Groucho”

“Freaky Groucho”

Oil on canvas panel

I do a lot of perusing of antique shops and I’m always coming across these old ventriloquist dolls. I enjoy a good dummy act as well as the next guy but there is something creepy about the dolls when they are not being used. Maybe I’ve seen too many movies.

This one was interesting to paint because the face is flesh tone but it is really single tone of plastic. The human face has so many colors going on in it that when you remove them it looks weird. Maybe that is why they are freakish looking when not animated.
